Primary research:
For project development, I decided to work with soft materials including pastel, charcoal and soft pencils. It has established a mysterious atmosphere and emphasised the texture I want to achieve. I drew some sketches to illustrate how I am going to articulate with my character (pencil ones on image 5).
I have started sculpting the jocker (image 8). By the way, I am content with the first result, which is going to be his starting point of transformation and the beginning of animation. I based on the Photography project, modelling in clay (image 1 – experiment image 8, image 2 – experiment image 5). I chose to make my photos in the Halloween period, all the spooky things I have found extremely relate to my topic. Creating sketches, I tried to focus on the texture of clay and pattern of old paper, faded colours. What is more, photo 1 inspired me to use more pastel for my sketches.
I have visited an art exhibition. Nottingham contemporary presented sculptures of an artist (unfortunately I do not remember the name. She created a lot of unusual forms and used clay as well, but her works are more abstract, compared to my project.
Secondary research:
As previously mentioned on the blog, I have been inspired by three animators Yan Shvankmajer (two central images of mood board 1 -- image 3), Colin Raff and David Firth (the left corner of mood board 1). Their art resonates with the perception of how I see my project and the emotions I want to convey. They are uncanny and freaky. Yan Shvankmajer prefers clay and plays dough in his projects, Colin Raff uses a lot of old photos and David Firth draws interesting strange characters.
I also have collected a lot of images from the internet of old animations and old black and white photos (image 4), which have significantly affected my experiments. Using these, rare photos and shots from old animations especially Soviet ones (mood boards -- images 4 and 5 ), I created two imageboards in their capacity as an inspiration. I tried to replicate the same forms and shapes, it can be seen in sketches (images 5 and 7).
In addition, some keywords arose during the research such as the path of the soul, the uncanny, transformation, fortune, overthinking, questioning yourself, flow state, trust the peace, recklessness, mystery, game, adventures, risk. Moreover, I delved into the symbolic meaning of a deck of cards (image 6), which expanded the philosophical side of this project. The decks are metaphors for transformation, different periods of life and phases of development. I will reflect these ideas through the physical changes of jester’s forms. My illustrations show an inconsistent image of the character.

I am going to continue working with clay to blind what I already have drawn and developed what I have got so far with experimentation (image 8). The next step is to start adding playing cards in the background and explicitly creating interaction with the jester. Important point is to play with clay to find new variants of configurations.
It might also be noted that physical experiments launched the overall picture of the future animation.
